Psychologie

One important concern of the division is university teaching. Medicine students are prepared to practice biopsychosocial medicine in Module XXII Menschliche Psyche/Human Psyche and in different required tracks. In the Dentistry program, this curriculum is integrated into Module XXII Nervensystem und Psyche/Nervous System and the Psyche. Different electives, a research seminar and a special research module round off the department's course offerings.

Lehre

Research-led teaching

In teaching, the department seeks to network with related disciplines, e.g., the joint module Menschliche Psyche/Human Psyche (with the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine and the Institute of General Practice and Evidence-based Health Services Research). The practice of biopsychosocial medicine is accelerated by the use of simulation patients in cooperation with other departments.

Furthermore, the cooperation with the local Clinical Skills Center (CSC) on the objective structured clinical exam (OSCE I) is excellent and well-established, and the use of simulation patients in the different clinical subjects for the OSCE II has been successful.

Weiterbildung

Postgraduate training

The wide range of professional development opportunities at the Medical University of Graz is directed at a variety of occupational groups in the fields of medicine, science and research, nursing and health services. Most of the professional development courses can be completed while the participant is regularly employed and provide him/her with a valuable additional qualification.

Teaching Units

A teaching unit is a university structure set up to promote research-led and innovative teaching. Our division currently includes the following four teaching units:

Other initiatives

Peer2Peer program at the Medical University of Graz

The Peer2Peer program aims to be a point of contact where future doctors, health care professionals and scientists can improve and promote their own health, teaching students how to deal with crisis situations in their own life as well as in patient care. The program features trained student tutors who are a first point of contact in situations involving learning challenges, test anxiety and stress related to their studies. These "peers" are supervised and trained by health care professionals. In addition to these "peers" supervising and relaying information, medical professionals in the division can—when necessary—offer psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic services to maintain the health of doctors.

Simulation Patient Program

The focus at the Medical University of Graz is on the communication skills taught in the curriculum of the Medicine degree program. In line with the biopsychosocial model, a trusting relationship between doctor and patient is especially important and critical to achieving better diagnostics and therapy and thus greater patient satisfaction.

One important component in the teaching and improvement of these communication skills is practical medical training with simulation patients. In a safe environment, students can practice with "patients" played by actors and master conversational techniques, the process of breaking bad news and giving a diagnosis as well as professional behavior in realistic work situations.

Digital Skills, Knowledge and Communication

To prepare future doctors for digitalization in medicine, this interuniversity project funded by the BMBWF deals with different aspects of digitalization (including knowledge and understanding of digitalization, handling data and media, image processing, AI, etc.). Our division focuses on the communicative process within the digital framework (telemedicine) and offers a specialization in teaching. Educational research is also conducted.
